# Server-side vs client-side tracking: the difference and how to choose

Server-side tracking suits companies with large ad budgets, where lost conversion data affects decisions, and that want control over the data sent to third parties. For sites with small budgets and simple measurement needs, a correctly set up client-side setup is enough. Most setups use both, and consent rules apply to both.

- Client-side is simple and cheap, but browser restrictions affect it.
- Server-side gives data control and better signal quality, at a cost in money and maintenance.
- Consent rules apply the same way to both.

## Server-side tracking vs Client-side tracking

| Criterion | Client-side | Server-side |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Data path | Browser → platforms | Browser → your own server → platforms |
| Blocking | Affected by ad blockers and browser restrictions | Less affected |
| Data control | The platform gets whatever it collects | You decide on the server which fields are sent |
| Page speed | Many tags can slow the page | Fewer tags may be needed in the browser |
| Cost | Low | Server cost and maintenance |
| Setup | Simple | Needs technical skills |

## Why server-side?

Ad blockers, browser tracking restrictions and in-app browsers make you lose part of the data sent from the browser, and ad algorithms then learn from incomplete data. The server side reduces that loss and lets you filter personal data before it reaches the platforms.

## Limits

Server-side tracking cannot be used to get around a user's consent choice. A faulty client-side setup does not fix itself when you move it to the server either; get the basics right first.

## Who is Server-side tracking for, who is Client-side tracking for?

**Server-side is for:** companies with large ad budgets, several channels and a need to control their data.

**Client-side is for:** sites with small budgets and simple measurement needs, or teams that need to fix the basics before moving to the server side.

## FAQ

### Does server-side tracking replace client-side tracking?

Usually they work together: the browser tag collects the data, and the server processes it and passes it on to the platforms. Some platforms, Meta for example, take both the pixel and the server events and deduplicate them.

### Can server-side tracking get around consent?

It must not. If a user has not given consent, no data is sent for that user from the server either; the same consent rules apply on both sides.

### Do small sites need server-side tracking?

If the ad budget is small and conversion data does not change decisions much, a correctly set up client-side setup can be enough.
