# What is Brand identity?

Brand identity is the set of elements that define how a brand describes itself and wants to be seen: positioning, values, tone of voice, name, logo, colours and typography. Brand image is how the audience actually perceives it; a consistent identity brings perception closer to intent.

## In short

Brand identity is the reference frame that makes every touchpoint, from ads to customer emails, feel like the same company. It is usually documented in brand guidelines covering strategic, verbal and visual elements, with consistency tracked through awareness and perception research. Online, keeping the brand description, service list and name identical on the website, LinkedIn and directory profiles helps search engines and AI assistants describe the brand accurately. The same tone of voice and colour palette, for example, carry from an ad to its landing page.

## Key points

- Brand identity is made up of strategic, verbal and visual elements.
- The strategic layer covers positioning, audience, value proposition and values.
- The visual layer includes the logo, colour palette, typography and imagery.
- Brand image is how the audience actually perceives that identity.
- Inconsistent brand descriptions can lead search engines and AI assistants to misrepresent the brand.

## Parts of a brand identity

- **Strategic:** positioning, audience, value proposition, values.
- **Verbal:** name, one-sentence description, tone of voice, key messages.
- **Visual:** logo, colour palette, typography, imagery.

## Consistency online

A brand's one-sentence description, service list and name should be identical on its website, LinkedIn, directory profiles and in the press. Search engines and AI assistants learn a brand from these sources; inconsistent descriptions lead to the brand being misrepresented or not mentioned at all.

## Why it matters

A consistent identity builds trust and recognition and lets marketing teams produce consistent content faster.
