# What is Data enrichment?

Data enrichment is filling in missing details on contact and company records in the CRM or in a list (title, company size, industry, contact details, technologies used) from external data sources. In B2B it is used to build target lists, score leads, route them to the right rep and personalize messages.

## In short

Data enrichment turns incomplete records, often collected through short forms, into something sales and marketing can act on. Tools such as Clay automate the waterfall approach of querying several data providers in turn, and success is usually measured by fill rate and data accuracy. Enriched data feeds lead scoring, segmentation and personalized messaging. For example, when someone leaves only a work email, adding company size and industry lets the CRM route the record automatically to the rep who handles enterprise accounts.

## Key points

- Missing contact and company details in a CRM or list are filled from external sources.
- Title, company size, industry, contact details and technologies used can be added.
- In the waterfall approach, several providers are queried in sequence.
- External data is not always current; verify email addresses before sending.
- Processing personal data must be assessed under KVKK and the GDPR.

## How is it done?

A record (for example, just a name and a company domain) is looked up in one or more data providers, and the details found are added to the record. A "waterfall" approach, where several providers are queried in sequence, helps fill in records that a single source can't find.

## What to watch

External data is not always current; email addresses should be verified before sending. Processing personal data must be assessed under KVKK (Turkey's personal data protection law) and the GDPR.

## Why it matters

Teams working with short forms and incomplete CRM records can prioritize leads correctly thanks to enrichment. Related service: [GTM engineering and Clay](https://www.roicool.com/en/services/gtm-engineering).
