# What is Email deliverability?

Email deliverability is the ability of the emails you send to reach the recipient's inbox rather than the spam folder. It is determined by authentication records (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), sending domain and IP reputation, spam complaint and bounce rates, list quality, sending volume and content.

## In short

Email deliverability decides whether newsletters, automations and sales emails are ever read. Major mailbox providers such as Gmail and Yahoo now expect bulk senders to authenticate their mail, offer easy unsubscribe and keep spam complaints low, so it has become a marketing concern as much as a technical one. It is monitored through Google Postmaster Tools, bounce rates and inbox placement tests sent to seed addresses. For example, a campaign sent from a domain with no DMARC record may land largely in spam even when the list itself is clean.

## Key points

- Delivery means the server accepted the email; deliverability means it reached the inbox.
- SPF, DKIM and DMARC records should be complete and aligned.
- Spam complaints are tracked in Google Postmaster Tools; bounces and blocklists also shape reputation.
- A verified, opted-in and up-to-date list is a basic requirement.
- Gradual sending and an easy unsubscribe work better than sudden volume spikes.

## Delivery vs. deliverability

An email being "delivered" means the receiving server accepted it; it may still have landed in spam. Deliverability means reaching the inbox.

## What affects it?

- **Authentication:** are SPF, DKIM and DMARC complete and aligned?
- **Reputation:** spam complaint rate (tracked in Google Postmaster Tools), bounce rate, blocklists.
- **List:** verified, opted-in and up-to-date addresses.
- **Behavior:** gradual sending instead of sudden volume spikes, easy unsubscribe.

## Why it matters

An email that lands in spam goes unread, however well it is written; proposal and invoice emails can be affected too. Audit: [email deliverability](https://www.roicool.com/en/services/email-deliverability).
