# What is Reverse ETL?

Reverse ETL is the process of sending data that has been unified and modeled in a data warehouse (customer scores, segments, lifetime value) back to operational systems such as the CRM, ad platforms and email tools. Unlike classic ETL, data flows from the warehouse to the tools, so teams can use analysis in their day-to-day work.

## In short

Reverse ETL moves analysis out of dashboards into the tools sales and marketing teams use daily. Lead priority in the CRM, value-based audiences in ad platforms and email personalization then draw on the same customer data. Typically, the output of a model defined in the warehouse is synced to the target system at set intervals by tools such as Hightouch or Census. For example, accounts that used a product three times in the last 90 days without buying can flow automatically into a CRM sales list and a retargeting audience.

## Key points

- Reverse ETL sends modeled data from the data warehouse back into operational tools.
- Unlike classic ETL, data flows from the warehouse out to CRM, ad and email tools.
- Customer scores, segments and lifetime value are typical fields to sync.
- Syncs run at set intervals into a field, an audience or a segment in the target system.
- It puts analysis to work in daily sales and marketing tasks instead of leaving it in reports.

## How does it work?

A model is defined in the data warehouse (e.g. "accounts that used the product three times in the last 90 days but haven't bought"); a reverse ETL tool syncs the result to the target system (a CRM field, an ad audience, an email segment) at set intervals.

## Why it matters

Analysis doesn't stay in reports; it reaches the tools sales and marketing teams actually use: lead priority in the CRM, value-based audiences in ads, personalization in email. For the warehouse setup: [marketing data warehouse](https://www.roicool.com/en/services/marketing-data-warehouse).
