Webflow SEO settings: 10 things to check before launch

Where Webflow keeps its built-in SEO settings, from meta titles and canonical tags to sitemaps, 301 redirects and schema, and how to set each one up properly.

Webflow's biggest SEO advantage is that the core technical settings live inside the platform, with no plugin to install. Its weak spot follows from the same fact: those settings are spread across several panels, and some are off by default. A site that goes live without checking each of them leaves part of that foundation unused.

This guide covers where each Webflow SEO setting lives and how to set it up, based on Webflow's own help documentation. Everything sits in two places: Page settings for each page, and Site settings > SEO plus Site settings > Publishing for the whole site.

1. SEO title and meta description

Each page's title tag and meta description go in Pages panel > Page settings > SEO settings. Webflow deliberately does not offer a site-wide title or description; every page carries its own. Webflow recommends keeping titles under 60 characters and sets no limit for descriptions, though search engines truncate long ones. There is no meta keywords field, because Google does not use it for ranking.

On Collection pages you build the title and description as a pattern: click "Add field" to insert CMS fields, and each item gets its own title automatically. Binding the post title plus a separate "SEO description" field in your blog template means every post can have its own description.

Once you publish, Webflow warns that changes can take days, weeks or even months to show up in search results.

2. Global canonical tag

Enter your site's base URL in Site settings > SEO > Global canonical tag URL and Webflow adds a canonical URL to every page, combined with that page's slug. Three things matter:

  • Include the protocol: https://www.yourdomain.com. If your default domain uses www, include www.
  • Leave off the trailing slash.
  • If you already inject canonical tags through another tool, such as Google Tag Manager, do not turn on the global setting in Webflow. Two canonical tags can lead search engines to ignore both.

Static pages can also take a page-level canonical, which overrides the global tag for that page. Use it when, say, a campaign page should pass its ranking credit to the main service page.

3. Auto-generated sitemap

Turn on the auto-generated sitemap in Site settings > SEO > Sitemap. Webflow rebuilds it on every publish and adds a lastmod tag with each page's last publish date. On sites using Localize, hreflang tags for every static and dynamic page go into the sitemap too.

Two practical notes. Once a sitemap is published, the /sitemap.xml page cannot be deleted. You can paste in a custom sitemap instead, but on a multilingual site you then have to add hreflang entries by hand. After launch, submit the sitemap in Google Search Console.

4. Keeping a page out of the index

For pages that should not be indexed (thank-you pages, campaign variants, internal pages) the right tool is the Sitemap indexing toggle in the page's SEO settings. Switched off, it removes the page from the sitemap and tells search engines not to index it. Webflow is explicit on this: if you block a page through robots.txt instead, it stays in the auto-generated sitemap.

On Premium there is also per-item indexing control for the CMS, so you can choose which individual Collection items search engines may index.

5. robots.txt

robots.txt rules go in Site settings > SEO > Indexing. Webflow adds your sitemap address to robots.txt by default; add it by hand as well and the file will list two sitemaps. Keep in mind:

  • robots.txt is public, so never use it to protect private content.
  • Badly behaved bots may ignore it.
  • To remove a page that is already indexed, use the Sitemap indexing toggle rather than robots.txt.

The same section lets you set a Content-Signal header, which tells AI crawlers how your content may be used. Webflow notes that it rests on a proposed extension to RFC 9309 and is not yet an accepted standard.

6. 301 redirects

Redirects live in Site settings > Publishing > 301 redirects. Webflow says the site needs a paid Site plan, or must sit in a Workspace with a paid Workspace plan. There is no hard cap, but Webflow recommends 1,000 redirects at most as good practice.

  • Folder redirects: old path /old-blog/(.*), new path /blog/%1. One rule moves a whole folder.
  • Order: Webflow runs redirects in the order they were added, so add specific rules before broad wildcard rules.
  • Locale folders: redirects do not apply to localized subdirectories automatically; /old and /de/old need two separate rules.
  • CSV: you can bulk import redirects (up to 16 MB), but a new import overwrites all existing redirects. Export first and merge.

7. Schema markup

Every page's Page settings has a Schema markup field, where you can add structured data by hand or generate it with Webflow AI. It needs a paid Site plan or a paid Workspace. On Collection pages you bind CMS fields so each item gets its own schema data. The limits:

  • Reference, multi-reference and multi-image fields cannot be used in schema. If you want referenced data, such as an author's name, in your schema, keep the same value in a plain text field as well.
  • Do not add the same schema in this field and in custom code; you will end up with duplicate structured data.
  • Valid schema does not guarantee rich results. Webflow suggests checking it with the Schema Markup Validator.

8. Open Graph

For social previews Webflow offers three Open Graph fields: title, description and image. Title and description can be copied from the SEO fields with one click. On Collection pages the Open Graph image comes from one of the Collection's image fields; Webflow says all Open Graph images in a Collection must share the same dimensions and recommends JPG or PNG.

9. Image alt text

Set alt text on the image in the Assets panel and it follows the image wherever it is used. Icons that carry no meaning can be marked as decorative. Webflow AI can also suggest alt text in bulk for JPG, PNG, GIF, WEBP and AVIF images; review the suggestions before you publish.

10. Multilingual SEO

On sites using Localize, Webflow sets the lang attribute for each locale automatically, lists each page's language variants with hreflang tags in the head, and adds them to the sitemap. Page-level SEO titles and Open Graph fields can be set per locale. Webflow AI can only generate metadata in the primary locale for now, so write secondary-language titles and descriptions yourself.

Mistakes we see on Webflow projects

Even with every setting in place, a few mistakes keep coming back:

  • The staging domain gets indexed. While the site is built on its webflow.io subdomain, links get shared and search engines find the address. Webflow lets you turn off indexing for the webflow.io subdomain; check it before launch.
  • A hard-coded title in a Collection template. Type plain text into the template's SEO title instead of a CMS field and every post carries the same title, which usually goes unnoticed until a few posts are live.
  • Missing Open Graph images. If a Collection has no image field, you cannot pick an Open Graph image and shares appear without one. Add a share-image field to the content model from the start.
  • Deleting instead of redirecting. Removing an old page without a redirect sends every link to it to a 404. Set up the redirect first, then remove the page.
  • Schema in two places. Filling the new Schema markup field while old schema still sits in custom code creates duplicate structured data.

Each of these looks small on its own, but a template-level mistake repeats on every item in the Collection.

Pre-launch checklist

  • [ ] Every static page has its own title and description.
  • [ ] Collection templates bind SEO and Open Graph fields to the CMS.
  • [ ] The global canonical URL has the right protocol and domain.
  • [ ] The auto-generated sitemap is on, and pages that should stay out have Sitemap indexing switched off.
  • [ ] robots.txt does not block crawling on the live site.
  • [ ] Redirects for old URLs are in place and tested.
  • [ ] Schema markup passes the validator without errors.
  • [ ] Images have alt text.
  • [ ] The sitemap has been submitted to Search Console.

Webflow's own pre-launch checklist puts heading structure, page titles and descriptions, SSL and indexing preferences, and Search Console setup on the same list.

Bottom line

Webflow gives you the core technical SEO settings without plugins; what makes the difference is setting them up completely, on every page and every Collection template. Frequently asked questions

Is Webflow good for SEO?

Webflow has built-in page-level titles and descriptions, canonical tags, an auto-generated sitemap, robots.txt, 301 redirects, schema markup and Open Graph settings. That is a solid technical base; rankings still come from content, site structure and links.

Where do I set the meta title and description in Webflow?

In Pages panel > Page settings > SEO settings. Webflow does not allow one site-wide title or description; every page carries its own. On Collection pages you bind the title and description to CMS fields so each item gets its own automatically.

Does Webflow generate a sitemap automatically?

Yes. Turn it on in Site settings > SEO > Sitemap; it updates on every publish and includes a lastmod date for each URL. On sites using Localize it also carries hreflang tags. To keep a page out, switch off that page's Sitemap indexing toggle.

Which plan do I need for 301 redirects in Webflow?

Webflow says the site needs a paid Site plan, or must sit in a Workspace on a paid Workspace plan. There is no hard cap, but Webflow recommends 1,000 redirects at most as good practice; wildcard rules cover whole folders.

How do I add schema markup in Webflow?

Use the Schema markup field in Page settings, by hand or with Webflow AI. On Collection pages, bind CMS fields so each item gets unique data, but note that reference, multi-reference and multi-image fields are not supported. Do not add the same schema in both the field and custom code.
