How it’s calculated
Conversions over visitors, as a percentage.
- Conversion rate = Conversions ÷ Visitors × 100
- Visitors per conversion = Visitors ÷ Conversions
- Conversions at target = Visitors × Target rate
Conversion rate is the share of visitors to a page or campaign who take the action you want (a purchase, a form, a call): conversions divided by visitors, times 100.
Conversion rate is most useful for tracking the same page or campaign over time; comparing rates across industries misleads.
The target line shows what an improvement is worth: a higher conversion rate without more traffic means more results from the same budget.
Mind which traffic you compute it for: the rate for all site traffic and for ad traffic usually differ.
Limits
- With few visitors the rate swings; a handful of conversions moves it a lot.
- Sessions and users are different counts; use the same one when comparing.
- To see whether a change really lifts the rate, plan enough traffic with our A/B test sample size calculator.
